Renting a Room but Can I Claim expenses?`

Hey - I'm going through a brollie and claim expenses for subsistence, fuel etc. The only receipts I submit are fuel.

I'm renting a room right now but I receive no receipt with any sort of VAT info on it as I'm paying the landlord cash in hand. Can this still be claimed at all?

Of course, it's a business cost. If the brolly or HMRC do query it you can easily prove you have spent the money with the receipt, cheque stub or card statement...

    Oh, hang on a minute....
    Blog? What blog...?

The people that you need to ask are your employers, i.e. the umbrella company.

If i try and submit the expense through the brollie portal - it advises that I need a receipt.

              Yes, it was.

How can you prove what you spent the money on if you are paying cash? If you've got no proof of what you spent and where you spent it, then how can you claim it?

Maybe that's telling you that you need a receipt, then?

Some sort of receipt highly desirable. On the other hand I suppose, if living away from home, it cannot be disputed that you need to spend money on accomodation of some sort. As said, best to ask the brolly.

Why does the landlord only take cash and give no receipt? Is he avoiding tax?
